Outdoorsmen News 4/30/2009

We had nine make it for the meeting and Bible study Tuesday. Not bad considering the weather.

The reports from the Men's backpacking trip were good and everyone had a great time. The weather was quite good considering what had been forecast. Frank 'Trout Slayer' Foster put on a clinic of how to catch fish while Glenn Morrison provided (numerous) examples of why it's a good idea to replace your fishing line periodically. They're a team act.

We discussed Luke 20:1 - 8 (A question of authority) and also a bit of Luke 20:9 - 19 (The wicked tenants). Once again the religious leaders were unable to trap Jesus. The parable of the wicked tenants is both a historical reference and a prophesy of things to come. Both topics are just as pertinent today as they were back then. If you did not read Luke 20:9 -19 I recommend you take a moment to do so. We must make sure that we are not, or do not become, like the wicked tenants. Like the crowd Jesus was speaking to we all say "we'll never let this happen!" but just as in the parable it did happen; the messengers were rejected and abused and when the Son was sent he was killed and cast aside.

Outdoorsment New - 4/5/2009

Good turn out for the Bible study tonight. With the trap shoot coming up next weekend we decided to use the time for preparation and only got a little bit of actual Bible study in.

Calling all Outdoorsmen: If you are interested in the Antelope hunt this fall (September 26 - 29) you need to get a hold of us right away. Glenn is organizing party hunt groups to turn in applications for this hunt. As you may, or may not, know parties can contain up to five hunters and party hunt applications MUST BE TURNED IN ALL AT THE SAME TIME AS THE OTHER PARTY MEMBERS. Please contact Glenn Morrison or shoot me an e-mail indicating you are interested. We'll make sure we get you an application form and the other necessary information. You need to contact us by next (Easter) Sunday.

Outdoorsmen request for assistance:
Chad Ripley has requested assistance in moving out of his house. He has quite a bit to move with much of it going into storage. Chad would like help on the evening of Thursday April 9 and all day/any time Friday April 10. Pick-ups and trailers are most welcome. Ok, ok, who knows the song....."there was armored cars and tanks and jeeps and rigs of every size, the chicken coops was filled with bears and choppers filled the skies. We shot the line, we went for broke with a thousand screaming trucks, and eleven long-haired friends of Jesus in a chartreuse micro-bus" Anybody?
Please contact Chad for more info.

Outdoorsmen Trap Shoot
Glen received confirmation today that the church has OK'd our giving away a shotgun as a prize at this years event. Glen is working with Capital Sports to obtain a Benelli Nova 12-ga.

Glenn reports that the trap shoot is all confirmed. Helena Trap Club is setting us up with four houses. We will be charging $6.00/round to shoot. Glenn is working on getting a shot-gun as a grand prize (one dollar per round is going to help pay for this). We've also reserved the banquet room at the shooting range for dinner. Like last year this will be a pot-luck event. A suggestion was made this evening to prepare a list of who's bringing what to avoid too much of one thing and not enough of another. We'll need to discuss further but perhaps the Outdoorsmen should concentrate on drinks, ice, ???? and other items that most of the participants probably won't bring. This is one of the most popular and well attended Outdoorsmen events. I encourage you all to come and to invite others. Doesn't matter if you've never shot before just come on out and give it a try.

Here's what we need to do:
1) Invite everybody you can. We will hopefully have some flyers distributed by weeks end but we, the Outdoorsmen, can spread the word to more people in less time. If each of us get just two people to attend we'll have 165 people participating.
2) Make sure everyone knows that this is a pot-luck event and they should bring a dish (enough for 8-10 people). I will be creating a pot-luck dish register (if that doesn't sound a little light in the loafers then I don't know what does) to track who's bringing what (see comments in the paragraph above)
3) Pitch in some cash to help pay for the event and prizes. We've budgeted $300 for the entire event. The cost of the shotgun is $315. The cost of the banquet room is $50. The cost of the other prizes is $??. We discussed a number of prizes that we would like to give away at the event this year. The cost of those prizes will add another $150.00 - $200.00 to the event. Even with $1.00/round going to help pay for the event we're still going to be short. If you have the ability and the inclination please consider contributing a few dollars.

We need all the Outdoorsmen to attend this event and help out. The event start time is 10:00 AM. Plan on being at the Helena Trap club at least an hour early. We need to assign duties, rganize prizes and the dining area, setup a ticket booth/counter and more. We also want to get out an meet everyone who attends this year. We all need to make it a point to introduce ourselves to at least three people we don't know or have not met. Remember, the purpose of our Outdoorsmen events is to reach people who may never consider coming to church. (thanks Joe)

Upcoming Outdoorsmen Events
Saturday April 11 - Outdoorsmen Trap Shoot -- Helena Trap Club
This is another community event put on by the Outdoorsmen. It's a lot of fun for everyone.
Please arrive no later than 9:00 AM to help setup and prepare. Shoot starts at 10:00 AM.

Sunday April 19 - Equipment Swap and Prep at HSBC
We'll meet after second service. Bring your gear, and any extra gear you may have, to church. We'll take the opportunity to make sure everybody has what they need and that we're not doubling up on stuff we don't need.

Friday - Sunday April 24 - 26 - Outdoorsmen men's backpacking trip -- Meet at HSBC
I believe the location is going to be the same as last year which is along the MO between Hauser and Holter. If you plan on going on this trip (and you should) you need to be sure to attend some Tuesday meetings to learn all the details.

Saturday May 2 - HSBC 'The Big Give Away'
Setup from 0-dark:30 to 11:00 AM. Event begins at 11:00 AM

Friday - Sunday May 29 - 31 - Outdoorsmen Father/Son Campout
Location TBA

Next Outdoorsmen meeting and Bible study

Tuesday April 14, Smith's Place in East Helena, 7:00 PM
We'll be discussing Luke 19:28 - 40 (The triumphal entry) but please also read Luke 19:41 - 44 (Lament over Jerusalem)

Sunday April 19, Starbucks on Prospect, 5:30 - 7:00 PM
We'll be discussing Luke 19:41 - 44 (Lament over Jerusalem). I made the suggestion that since we'll be meeting after second service to get all the equipment in order for the men's backpacking trip perhaps we should consider moving the Bible study to HSBC after second service so we're not filling up the entire day. For those of us with children in AWANA it probably won't matter much as we'll still be dropping of the kids and picking them up. Please reply with your vote/opinion; the consensus at the Bible study this evening was.....well there really wasn't any consensus......I'll plan on keeping the schedule as-is unless I hear from a number of you that you'd like to change it. Thanks.
