We had great weather and decent skiing conditions. I believe everyone who attended had a great time. A very big THANK YOU to the Morrison family for bringing firewood, water, cook pot, cups and hot chocolate mix.

One quick note on the Family Ski day: this was the second year in a row the Outdoorsmen held this event and very few Outdoorsmen families attend. I think the event is great but perhaps better for a church organized event instead of an Outdoorsmen event. I'd like to hear back what your thoughts are on this.

Attached are 4 files for the next meeting.
1) Morris - Time Line for Revelations
2) Morris - Revelations 1.1 to 1.5 (from last week)
3) Morris - Revelations 1.5 to 1.17 (for next meeting)
4) Pastor John's Time Line for Revelations (jpg image)

Please print and bring a copy to the meeting. I do not see one on the schedule but that doesn't mean we can't add one. The only thing we have on the schedule is helping out at the Duck's Unlimited Greenwings Event on September 12. Got and idea? Willing to take the lead and organize the event? Great! We've been studying Christ's death and resurrection (Luke 24) and have had very good discussion on what we've covered so far.

Jesus is dead and the lives of the disciples have been turned upside down, their hopes and dreams seemingly dashed. We benefit from being able to study the Word of God and we know that Jesus had to die so that he could rise again, but why do they feel that all hope is lost? Didn't they also know these things? Didn't Jesus tell them this would happen? Luke 24:13-35 tells us

13Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. 14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16but they were kept from recognizing him.
17He asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?"

They stood still, their faces downcast. 18One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, "Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?"

19"What things?" he asked.

"About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see."

25He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26Did not the Christ[b] have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

28As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. 29But they urged him strongly, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.

30When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"

33They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34and saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon." 35Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

Cleopas and another disciple have a personal encounter with Christ on the road to Emmaus not knowing it is Jesus they run in to. Do they refer to Jesus as 'The Messiah'? As the Son of God? No. He's now merely a prophet. They tell the stranger it's the third day since Jesus died, indicating they knew something was supposed to happen on the third day, and then they go on to explain how some of the women had found the tomb empty, saw angels who told them Jesus was alive and how some of the other disciples confirmed the women's report. Yet these guys are on the road leaving Jerusalem? What, exactly, were they expecting? It seems so obvious to read about it now but we need to try and put ourselves in their place. If I was there and had seen Jesus die upon that cross would I have had a mustard seed of faith that I would see him alive again in three days? Would I have been sitting back drinking a cold one saying "any minute now"? No, I wouldn't. That's the honest truth. I would have been as depressed as the rest of them. How could I accept that the Son of God, the Messiah, was killed upon that cross? What would have been going through my mind? Cut your losses. I was wrong. He wasn't the one. What am I going to do now? Probably best if we got the heck out of Jerusalem. The disciples were no different than any of us. That's important because we, too, are disciples of Christ. We, too, can suffer from the same lack of understanding and same lack of faith.

But we have an ace in the hole, an edge. We have something those disciples did not. We have the Bible; the Word of God. We can benefit from their mistakes and it's important that we do. That's why God gave us his Word. It's not supposed to sit on the shelf collecting dust. It's not a coffee table book we put out to impress visitors. We need to read it. Often. We need to study and understand it. We need to share it and discuss it with others. This is the purpose of our Outdoorsmen Bible study. I try and read the Bible daily but I benefit so much from those of you who attend the Bible studies. There are new ideas and concepts I have not considered and answers to questions I have or sometimes didn't even know I have. I hope you benefit as much as I do. And I hope that more of you will consider joining us.

Someday I may be walking along the road to Wolf Creek (or Craig) going to retrieve my truck and trailer (because I was too cheap to pay for a shuttle) and run into a stranger who will ask me about Jesus. How will I respond? What will I say? All I need is the faith of a mustard seed and to know the Word of God.

Did you know?
Outdoorsman Luke Thomasson and his son Austin are heading to China on a missions trip (not to be confused with being sent to China on a mission like in Mission Impossible or The Bourne Identity). My first thought is Wow! My second thought is "hmmmm, I wonder if Luke's southern drawl translates into Chinese well........". Silliness aside, this is a big deal. John-Luke Thomasson has already been to China (twice if I remember correctly) but this is a first for his brother and father. What can we do to help? First, add Luke and Austin to your prayers. Second, consider helping out financially if you are able. Contact Luke or Austin at church on Sunday for more information.

Outdoorsmen meeting schedule change - WE ARE SCHEDULED FOR OUR REGULAR TUESDAY MEETING ON 1/19/2010
The Outdoorsmen BattleZone class has been scheduled for Tuesday nights beginning 2/22/2010. Outdoorsmen regular bi-weekly Tuesday meetings will be suspended through February and March. The Outdoorsmen regular bi-weekly Tuesday meetings will resume on April 13, 2010 at Smith's Place in East Helena.
We really need to know who will be attending the Battle Zone class. To get it scheduled and to get books ordered we simply need to know. Some of you have indicated your interest in the past but now I need a confirmation. Please reply to me if you are planning on attending. We have some limited financial aid available if the $50 cost of the book is holding you back (please contact me directly for more information). Thanks.

Outdoorsmen BattleZone class
We have decided to plan for a BZ class beginning the first week of February 2010. We will hold an introduction meeting on Tuesday January 26 and begin the classes on Tuesday February 2. We chose Tuesday nights so you won't have to find/free up another night each week (assuming you are already attending Outdoorsmen meetings on Tuesdays). The course runs for ten weeks and we will suspend regular Tuesday Outdoorsmen meetings during this time. A number of you have expressed interest and this will hopefully allow you enough time to plan/prepare. The cost is $50 for the course book (and you need the book). You will be required to study/prepare a couple hours before each weeks meeting. We are planning on starting the meetings at 6:00 PM so we can get home at a decent time after 2 - 2½ hour meetings. I'll provide more info. as we develop it.

Outdoorsmen Wild Game Feast - Saturday February 6th
If you have not yet signed up to help with setup and tear down please do so by contacting Glenn Morrison. Glenn has an assignment list and we really need each of you to sign up for a handful of tasks each.

I have received a number of donations of ground game meat for the Wild Game Feast. I am now asking for volunteer families to prepare dishes with this meat. These dishes are IN ADDITION to whatever else you will be bringing. Remember, these dishes are to make sure we have plenty to go around as the wild game typically disappears on the first pass through the line. They don't need to be anything fancy ("it's brook trout almandine in a light crème sauce"). Suggestions include casseroles, shepards pie, etc. but whatever turns your crank. Let me know if you are willing to prepare an extra dish and how much meat you would like (2, 3, 4 lbs., etc.).

Outdoorsmen Family Ski Day - Saturday February 27th, Great Divide
We are officially scheduled with Great Divide. I have sign-up sheets available. Please get them from me at a meeting, at church, at my house, at my office, however you want. You can distribute to the sign-up sheets to anyone who may be interested in attending. All instructions are on the sheet including pricing and how to return them to me.

NRA Basic Pistol Class for Outdoorsmen and spouses
Gregg is offering to hold an 'NRA Basic Pistol' class for Outdoorsmen and spouses for $20 a person (regularly $80/person). Completion of the class is required for a Concealed Carry Permit in Montana should you so desire one. He is suggesting a Saturday in April, May, June or July up at the Prickly Pear range on McDonald pass (range membership will not be required for class attendees). Please respond to let me know if you are interested and what date you prefer. I'll pass on the numbers and most popular date to Greg and let him get it all arranged and then I'll post it to our calendar.

Outdoorsmen Events
Here's a brief outline of Outdoorsmen events for 2010. We have a gentleman at Hannaford who is an accomplished decoy carver. His decoys are of such quality they are suitable for interior decoration (fireplace mantle, etc.) but are also fully field worthy (put 'em in a pond and shoot ducks over 'em). He has agreed to put on an instructional demonstration for the HSBC Outdoorsmen group. This seems like a great opportunity for all of us to get introduced to something new. This gives us a target of 30 trees to cut. Way to go Tracy!
We are planning on another Christmas Tree cut-and-give this year. We'll be looking to cut and distribute a few more trees then last year. If you have ideas of businesses, organizations or families that could really benefit from a free Christmas tree and stand please let us know. We'll plan on a cutting event sometime around the first week of December. We'd like to have a few more people show up to assist with the Salvation Army event this year.
Christmas Tee Cut is being scheduled for either Dec. 12th or 19th
depending on when the Salvation Army (and other organizations) will be holding their distribution event. We want our tree cutting event to take place approx. 10-12 days before the distribution event.
Christmas Tree Give Away
will take place on either Dec. 19th or 26th. Last year three of us (and Glenn's dog) participated in this event. The temp. was in the low teens and it snowed most of the day. We were outside for a majority of the event and we had a great time. We assisted families with getting their items to their cars and also assisted with loading. We gave away a tree and brand-new tree-stand to any family that wanted one. The distribution event is an organized, coordinated effort of a number of local charitable agencies that provides toys, clothing, bikes, food and more to needy families just before Christmas. Families received goods based upon family size, number of children, etc. Many recipients were very emotional and it was obvious the distribution represented a huge benefit to them. To be able to receive a tree and stand as well was icing on the cake for some of them.
There are 67 of us receiving this e-mail message (maybe 60 of you delete it when you receive it?). Surely we can put forth a better effort this year. This is an opportunity we need to embrace.

Now accepting reservations to help out at the Outdoorsmen Wild Game Feast
Yes, this means you! We want to grow this event and bring in more non-Outdoorsmen, non-Hannaford goers, etc. To be successful requires a group effort. There is work to be done leading up to the event but we really need commitments from individuals to work at the event on January 16th.

We are planning on starting the meetings at 6:00 PM (possibly at 5:30 PM) so we can get home at a decent time after 2 - 2½ hour meetings. I'll provide more info. as we develop it.

Next Outdoorsmen Meeting and Bible study
Tuesday November 10, Smith's Place Cafe in East Helena, 7:00 PM
Luke Chapter 23:26-43

Sunday November 15, Starbuck's on Prospect, 5:30 - 7:00 PM
Luke Chapter 23:44-49

Note: For those who don't know, HSBC is Hannaford Street Bible Church and it is located at
830 N Hannaford St.
Helena, MT

John Noble outdoorsmen@hannaford.org
HSBC Outdoorsmen

We had six show up on Tuesday. Better than the last two meetings but still pretty weak. Three of us stayed for Bible study. We discussed Luke 23:7-25; Pilate sends Jesus to Herod who sends him back to Pilate. Neither of the Roman officials find any fault in Jesus yet the Jewish leaders demand his death. Why did the multitude turn on Jesus? (verses 18 and 21 say they cried out as one, or all at once)
I found the following on the web and believe it provides a good explanation as to why. What do you think? We need to think about this stuff. That's why it's in the Bible. Pilate and Herod, two non-believers who cared little for Jews and less for their religion, stand out in this passage because they do the right thing (find no reason to convict Jesus) even when Jesus' own people are wanting him dead. What message is in there for us?.............

5. JESUS RETURNS TO PILATE

When the guards had brought Jesus back to Pilate, he went out on the front steps of the praetorium, where his judgment seat had been placed, and calling together the chief priests and Sanhedrists, said to them: "You brought this man before me with charges that he perverts the people, forbids the payment of taxes, and claims to be king of the Jews. I have examined him and fail to find him guilty of these charges. In fact, I find no fault in him. Then I sent him to Herod, and the tetrarch must have reached the same conclusion since he has sent him back to us. Certainly, nothing worthy of death has been done by this man. If you still think he needs to be disciplined, I am willing to chastise him before I release him."

Just as the Jews were about to engage in shouting their protests against the release of Jesus, a vast crowd came marching up to the praetorium for the purpose of asking Pilate for the release of a prisoner in honor of the Passover feast. For some time it had been the custom of the Roman governors to allow the populace to choose some imprisoned or condemned man for pardon at the time of the Passover. And now that this crowd had come before him to ask for the release of a prisoner, and since Jesus had so recently been in great favor with the multitudes, it occurred to Pilate that he might possibly extricate himself from his predicament by proposing to this group that, since Jesus was now a prisoner before his judgment seat, he release to them this man of Galilee as the token of Passover good will.

As the crowd surged up on the steps of the building, Pilate heard them calling out the name of one Barabbas. Barabbas was a noted political agitator and murderous robber, the son of a priest, who had recently been apprehended in the act of robbery and murder on the Jericho road. This man was under sentence to die as soon as the Passover festivities were over.

Pilate stood up and explained to the crowd that Jesus had been brought to him by the chief priests, who sought to have him put to death on certain charges, and that he did not think the man was worthy of death. Said Pilate: "Which, therefore, would you prefer that I release to you, this Barabbas, the murderer, or this Jesus of Galilee?" And when Pilate had thus spoken, the chief priests and the Sanhedrin councilors all shouted at the top of their voices, "Barabbas, Barabbas!" And when the people saw that the chief priests were minded to have Jesus put to death, they quickly joined in the clamor for his life while they loudly shouted for the release of Barabbas.

A few days before this the multitude had stood in awe of Jesus, but the mob did not look up to one who, having claimed to be the Son of God, now found himself in the custody of the chief priests and the rulers and on trial before Pilate for his life. Jesus could be a hero in the eyes of the populace when he was driving the money-changers and the traders out of the temple, but not when he was a nonresisting prisoner in the hands of his enemies and on trial for his life.

Upcoming Outdoorsmen events

Outdoorsmen Duck Hunt @ Freezeout Lake, October 23-25 --- this has been postponed/cancelled

Is there any interest in a duck decoy carving demo/instructional seminar instead? Let me know. (hint: that means you should reply)

Outdoorsmen Big Game Hunt @ Mizpah Christian Retreat, November 5-8
Two cabins are being reserved at Mizpah.
Pilate asked "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answers yes to all three questions yet the responses between the two were totally different.

The Sanhedrin see the response as totally condemning with no need for further evidence. They don't even think about considering whether or not Jesus may be the messiah they've been hoping for. How ironic to pray expectantly for God to send a messiah and then persecute with extreme prejudice anyone who claims to be him.

Pilate sees the response as......anything but in violation of Roman law. He can care less if someone wants to claim to be the king of the Jews. His main concern is avoiding a religious riot by the Jews and the consequences from Rome it that happens.

How sad is it that Jesus, the son of God, Christ the messiah was there, actually there in the flesh, and people either didn't care or aggressively persecuted him even to his death? Would it happen any differently today in our society?

What do you think? Or, what's your opinion? It'd be great to hear from you but even better to see you at an Outdoorsmen meeting. We had three show up last Tuesday and four on Sunday night. School is back in, AWANA has started and the days are growing shorter so we kinda' expected attendance to increase a bit (not drop drastically). I know we're all busy and taking turns being sick but what other excuses do we have? Here's a good one: "I spent so much time praying and reading my Bible this week I didn't have time to come to an Outdoorsmen meeting."

Maybe some of you aren't so much into the Bible study thing. We have another whole year of Outdoorsmen events to plan for and the more input the better. Interested in a sporting-clay shoot? Turkey hunt? Fly fishing float trip? Cast & blast? Crocheting class? Most of those are ideas other members are interested in as well. The only way they get scheduled is when a group of us get together and plan them. Come to Smith's Place on a Tuesday night, eat a huge meal for somewhere around $10 (you shoulda' seen the plate of spaghetti Jerry put down on Tuesday; the waiter guy said he'd never had anyone actually finish it) and share your ideas and get involved.

One other thing: we are just about SIX PAGES AWAY FROM COMPLETING OUR STUDY BOOK ON LUKE!
Yes, you heard me correctly. After only about two years we are almost finished. You don't want to miss the end of this do you?

Upcoming Outdoorsmen events

Outdoorsmen Duck Hunt @ Freezeout Lake, October 23-25 --- this may be moved to a different location because reports from Freezeout are very little waterfowl present
Get ahold of Glenn Morrison to discuss or to offer ideas/suggestions. We studied the first part of Luke chapter 21 and ended with a good discussion on temptation and weakness and how we are supposed to face them as Christian men. It's open, candid conversation on these types of topics that many say yield the most benefit from our Outdoorsmen meetings. Over 75% of you (the recipients of these news letters) have never attended an Outdoorsmen meeting. I encourage you to come and see what we're all about. Heck, you just might end up having a great time and meet some new friends.

Request for assistance:
Pastor John Fenlason has asked to borrow a number of large (6-8 person) tents for the Hannaford Junior Camp at Mizpah Christian Retreat the weekend of July 18-19. Not bad considering the weather.

The reports from the Men's backpacking trip were good and everyone had a great time. The weather was quite good considering what had been forecast. Frank 'Trout Slayer' Foster put on a clinic of how to catch fish while Glenn Morrison provided (numerous) examples of why it's a good idea to replace your fishing line periodically. They're a team act.

We discussed Luke 20:1 - 8 (A question of authority) and also a bit of Luke 20:9 - 19 (The wicked tenants). Once again the religious leaders were unable to trap Jesus. The parable of the wicked tenants is both a historical reference and a prophesy of things to come. Both topics are just as pertinent today as they were back then. If you did not read Luke 20:9 -19 I recommend you take a moment to do so. We must make sure that we are not, or do not become, like the wicked tenants. Like the crowd Jesus was speaking to we all say "we'll never let this happen!" but just as in the parable it did happen; the messengers were rejected and abused and when the Son was sent he was killed and cast aside.

Upcoming Outdoorsmen Events
Saturday May 2 - HSBC 'The Big Give Away'
Setup from 8:30 to 11:00 AM. With the trap shoot coming up next weekend we decided to use the time for preparation and only got a little bit of actual Bible study in.

Calling all Outdoorsmen: If you are interested in the Antelope hunt this fall (September 26 - 29) you need to get a hold of us right away. Glenn is organizing party hunt groups to turn in applications for this hunt. As you may, or may not, know parties can contain up to five hunters and party hunt applications MUST BE TURNED IN ALL AT THE SAME TIME AS THE OTHER PARTY MEMBERS. Please contact Glenn Morrison or shoot me an e-mail indicating you are interested. We'll make sure we get you an application form and the other necessary information. You need to contact us by next (Easter) Sunday.

Outdoorsmen request for assistance:
Chad Ripley has requested assistance in moving out of his house. He has quite a bit to move with much of it going into storage. Chad would like help on the evening of Thursday April 9 and all day/any time Friday April 10. Pick-ups and trailers are most welcome. Ok, ok, who knows the song....."there was armored cars and tanks and jeeps and rigs of every size, the chicken coops was filled with bears and choppers filled the skies. We shot the line, we went for broke with a thousand screaming trucks, and eleven long-haired friends of Jesus in a chartreuse micro-bus" Anybody?
Please contact Chad for more info.

Outdoorsmen Trap Shoot
Glen received confirmation today that the church has OK'd our giving away a shotgun as a prize at this years event. Glen is working with Capital Sports to obtain a Benelli Nova 12-ga.

Glenn reports that the trap shoot is all confirmed. Helena Trap Club is setting us up with four houses. We will be charging $6.00/round to shoot. Glenn is working on getting a shot-gun as a grand prize (one dollar per round is going to help pay for this). We've also reserved the banquet room at the shooting range for dinner. Like last year this will be a pot-luck event. A suggestion was made this evening to prepare a list of who's bringing what to avoid too much of one thing and not enough of another. We'll need to discuss further but perhaps the Outdoorsmen should concentrate on drinks, ice, ???? and other items that most of the participants probably won't bring. This is one of the most popular and well attended Outdoorsmen events. I encourage you all to come and to invite others. Doesn't matter if you've never shot before just come on out and give it a try.

Here's what we need to do:
1) Invite everybody you can. We will hopefully have some flyers distributed by weeks end but we, the Outdoorsmen, can spread the word to more people in less time. If each of us get just two people to attend we'll have 165 people participating.
2) Make sure everyone knows that this is a pot-luck event and they should bring a dish (enough for 8-10 people). I will be creating a pot-luck dish register (if that doesn't sound a little light in the loafers then I don't know what does) to track who's bringing what (see comments in the paragraph above)
3) Pitch in some cash to help pay for the event and prizes. We've budgeted $300 for the entire event. The cost of the shotgun is $315. The cost of the banquet room is $50. The cost of the other prizes is $??. We discussed a number of prizes that we would like to give away at the event this year. The cost of those prizes will add another $150.00 - $200.00 to the event. Even with $1.00/round going to help pay for the event we're still going to be short. If you have the ability and the inclination please consider contributing a few dollars.

We need all the Outdoorsmen to attend this event and help out. The event start time is 10:00 AM. Plan on being at the Helena Trap club at least an hour early. We need to assign duties, rganize prizes and the dining area, setup a ticket booth/counter and more. We also want to get out an meet everyone who attends this year. We all need to make it a point to introduce ourselves to at least three people we don't know or have not met. Remember, the purpose of our Outdoorsmen events is to reach people who may never consider coming to church. (thanks Joe)

Upcoming Outdoorsmen Events
Saturday April 11 - Outdoorsmen Trap Shoot -- Helena Trap Club
This is another community event put on by the Outdoorsmen. It's a lot of fun for everyone.
Please arrive no later than 9:00 AM to help setup and prepare. Shoot starts at 10:00 AM.

Sunday April 19 - Equipment Swap and Prep at HSBC
We'll meet after second service. Bring your gear, and any extra gear you may have, to church. We'll take the opportunity to make sure everybody has what they need and that we're not doubling up on stuff we don't need.

Friday - Sunday April 24 - 26 - Outdoorsmen men's backpacking trip -- Meet at HSBC
I believe the location is going to be the same as last year which is along the MO between Hauser and Holter. If you plan on going on this trip (and you should) you need to be sure to attend some Tuesday meetings to learn all the details.

Saturday May 2 - HSBC 'The Big Give Away'
Setup from 0-dark:30 to 11:00 AM. Event begins at 11:00 AM

Friday - Sunday May 29 - 31 - Outdoorsmen Father/Son Campout
Location TBA

Next Outdoorsmen meeting and Bible study

Tuesday April 14, Smith's Place in East Helena, 7:00 PM
We'll be discussing Luke 19:28 - 40 (The triumphal entry) but please also read Luke 19:41 - 44 (Lament over Jerusalem)

Sunday April 19, Starbucks on Prospect, 5:30 - 7:00 PM
We'll be discussing Luke 19:41 - 44 (Lament over Jerusalem). I made the suggestion that since we'll be meeting after second service to get all the equipment in order for the men's backpacking trip perhaps we should consider moving the Bible study to HSBC after second service so we're not filling up the entire day. For those of us with children in AWANA it probably won't matter much as we'll still be dropping of the kids and picking them up. Please reply with your vote/opinion; the consensus at the Bible study this evening was.....well there really wasn't any consensus......I'll plan on keeping the schedule as-is unless I hear from a number of you that you'd like to change it. Thanks.

Note: For those who don't know, HSBC is Hannaford Street Bible Church and it is located at
830 N Hannaford St.
Helena, MT

John Noble outdoorsmen@hannaford.org
HSBC Outdoorsmen

Outdoorsmen New 3/22/2009

Great meeting this evening at Starbuck's. Nine guys showed up and we studied/discussed Luke 19:11-27, the parable of the ten minas. The parable teaches us that we have a responsibility to do something with the gift (salvation) God has given us and we will have to make an accounting for it when Jesus returns. We don't want to be like the third servant and bury/hide our gift; we need to put it to work. Many Outdoorsmen events are specifically conceived as outreach functions (Christmas tree give away, Wild Game feast, (upcoming) free firewood service, to name a few) in an effort to share God's gift with others. These events provide an opportunity for each of us to get involved and share.

Saturday (March 28) is the Outdoorsmen fly fishing clinic with CrossCurrents of Helena. As of this morning all 10 spots have been filled and I know of at least one on a waiting list.
For those of you participating next weekend here are the details:

Meet at HSBC at 8:00 AM sharp.
Bring a sack-lunch.
Bring waders if you got 'em.
Bring $20 for flies.

You'll be fishing on the Missouri but I'm not sure where (does that seem a little vague?).

If you will be dropping your children at my house for the day please let me know in advance so I can prepare accordingly. As of right now I have six scheduled and we have room for a few more. In addition to myself, Tracy Caudill from the Outdoorsmen will be here as will Jodi Morrison (so you can ease your wife's anxiety over leaving your kids with me......"you're sending our kids to the Noble's house and Jaymie won't be there?!?!? Oh my gosh, I've heard he drinks beer from a beer-bong and spits chewing tobacco on the walls! Are you insane!?!?!?!)

Upcoming Outdoorsmen Events
Saturday March 28 - Fly Fishing -- Meet at HSBC
This is a learn-to-fly fish outing done in conjunction with CrossCurrents of Helena. I didn't get a news letter out after last Tuesday's meeting.....and I plain didn't show up at Sunday's meeting.

Friday's Outdoorsmen Motorcycle movie night was a bust. I've heard not one person showed at Gerry's house. I guess that's indicative of the fact that there's not really that much interest in motorcycles within the group. Nothing wrong with that, we'll just need to focus on things that more people are interested in. Anyway, Gerry opened his house to us and had pizzas waiting but we failed to show. Make sure to say thanks to Gerry next time you see him.

Last Tuesday's meeting was great. If I remember correctly (I am getting old, you know) we had seven guys attend. We were working on the last part of Luke 18 and ended up having a great discussion on a little bit of everything.

Glenn reports that there were six or so at Sunday's meeting and that they finished up Luke 18 and got started on Luke 19.

While I was away this last weekend my wife, Jaymie, sent out a message (thanks Jaymie!) to you all regarding the passing of an Outdoorsman's brother and also his cousin. Glenn has sent a plant on behalf of the Outdoorsmen to the funeral home for the services this week. Please consider contributing $5.00 to help pay for the plant. All monies should be given directly to Glenn.

As mentioned previously, Glenn introduced a couple of new opportunities the Outdoorsmen may be interested in:

Ignite -- National Simulcast - August 8, 2009 -- This has been booked; the event is a Go.
Find out more about it here http://www.ignitemen.org
This is a pay-to-play event that will cost $400 for HSBC to host. Glenn is suggesting charging $15.00/person and providing a finger-lickin' good BBQ chicken lunch to all attendees. Attendance would not be limited to HSBC members only. Any proceeds above and beyond the total cost of the event will be donated to the Mizpah Christian Retreat fund. If you've got ideas or suggestions please forward them on to me or directly to Glenn.

Kings Hill 3-D Archery Tournament - July 18th & 19th (pending)
Hosted by Great Falls Archery Club. Camping available and it's a family-friendly event. http://www.greatfallsarchery.com/ - there's not much about the tournament up yet so contact Glenn for more details.
The Outdoorsmen currently have the Family Day at the Lake scheduled for July 18th. If we decide to add this archery tournament/campout to our calendar we will need to reschedule the Family Day at the Lake.
Once again, we need to hear from you if you think the Outdoorsmen should add this event to our schedule. Please reply to this message or contact Glenn directly.

Upcoming Outdoorsmen Events
Saturday March 14 - Ice fishing -- Canyon Ferry
Official meeting time and place not yet set but most likely early in East Helena. Stay tuned for more details.

Saturday March 28 - Fly Fishing -- Meet at HSBC
This is a learn-to-fly fish outing done in conjunction with CrossCurrents of Helena. We had nine guys make and really stayed on schedule by getting right into the Bible study and finishing our prayer requests and prayer at 7:00 PM sharp.

Perhaps it's just me but it sure seems that the more guys that attend the better the Bible study is. There's more versions of the Bible to read from and different commentary in each. More input and more ideas from more people. I've heard more than a few of you make the comment that you get way more out of our Bible studies than you do on your own. I totally agree, and in case you haven't noticed, I'm prone to steering us off topic by bringing up questions about something I read earlier in the week. Having others to discuss it with and hearing what they have to say is really what it's all about. For those of you who haven't been able to make it in a while I encourage you to get back into it. This is good stuff. It's an opportunity to learn about the Bible and gain a better understanding of what God is telling us. It's an opportunity to ask man questions to other men about what it all means and how it applies to us. So come on down, throw in a dip or a chew (and let me bum one off of you), pull up to the table and get into it.
Disclaimer: dipping snuff (spit tobacco) or chewing tobacco is not required to attend the Outdoorsmen meetings and isn't actually endorsed by the Outdoorsmen and most Outdoorsmen don't touch the stuff - except the big guy with the computer who says he quit but is in denial. Tobacco use can be hazardous to your health. Snuff and Chew are not safe alternatives to smoking.

So a few times now I've sent out requests for feedback from you all (hint: look at the two items following this one). So far the response has been less than stellar. I asked about interest in organizing a periodic fly-tying meeting; I received three responses. On the two requests below, including the response I got from Glenn, that doesn't actually indicate a preference on either, I've received exactly.......(carry the one.....) one response. I'm not asking you to volunteer to rake leaves at the battered husbands shelter or snuggle with sickly cats to nurture them. Just a simple response is all I ask. 'Hey John, that sounds like a good idea to me' or 'I don't think I'd be interested because I'm already too busy' or 'you're short and your mother dresses you funny!'. Anything is better than nothing. OK, I'll just step down now.........

Glenn introduced a couple of new opportunities the Outdoorsmen may be interested in:
Ignite -- National Simulcast - August 8, 2009
Find out more about it here http://www.ignitemen.org/
This is a pay-to-play event that will cost $400 for HSBC to host. Glenn is suggesting charging $15.00/person and providing a finger-lickin' good BBQ chicken lunch to all attendees. Attendance would not be limited to HSBC members only. Any proceeds above and beyond the total cost of the event will be donated to the Mizpah Christian Retreat fund.
We need to see by a show of hands how many think this is a good idea and would like the Outdoorsmen to move forward with it. OK, so if you raised your hand, please reply to this message and tell me or contact Glenn to let him know (better tell him why you were raising your hand as he typically doesn't read these messages until six or eight weeks after they arrive).

Outdoorsmen Motorcycle Movie Night - Friday March 6 at Jerry's house
We'll be watching The World's Fastest Indian with Anthony Hopkins. We'll finish up where we left off and then move on to Luke 18:31-34 (Jesus foretells His death a third time), Luke 18:35-43 (Jesus heals a blind beggar) and possibly get into chapter 19. Hope to see you there.

Sunday March 8, Starbuck's on Prospect, 5:30 - 7:00 PM
We'll be studying Luke chapter 19

Note: For those who don't know, HSBC is Hannaford Street Bible Church and it is located at
830 N Hannaford St.
Helena, MT

John Noble outdoorsmen@hannaford.org
HSBC Outdoorsmen

Tuesday's Outdoorsmen meeting and Bible study was once again sparsely attended but we had some very good discussion on the Bible passages of Luke 18:1-8 (The persistent widow) and Luke 18:9-14 (The Pharisee and the tax collector).

Glenn Morrison introduced a couple of new opportunities the Outdoorsmen may be interested in:
Ignite -- National Simulcast - August 8, 2009
Find out more about it here http://www.ignitemen.org/
This is a pay-to-play event that will cost $400 for HSBC to host. Please take a moment to give Keith Newmeyer a pat on the back for doing the lion's share on this one. I know there were many others involved that also need thanks but the one that comes to mind right now is Tom Stockton; thanks for hauling up the fire pit and keeping the water hot for everyone. Perhaps next year we can do two of these. If we get a few more guys involved to help out and if Keith can workout the details with Great Divide I think it'd be a good idea.

Sunday's meeting was a little sparse compared to the Tuesday turn-outs we've been getting but the Bible study was good. We got down to business by about 5:45 and walked out promptly at 7:00 PM. We finished up Luke 17:20-37 and moved on to 18:1-8 (The Unjust Judge). We'll be finishing up Luke 18:1-8 and get into Luke 18:9-14 (Two Prayers) at the next meeting on Tuesday, February 17.

Upcoming Outdoorsmen Events

Sunday February 15 - Ice fishing after church -- Canyon Ferry
Meet after second service in the foyer. We started off by watching some of On Any Sunday II while waiting for everyone to show up. We watched Faster and then Faster '03-'04 and also a bit of a movie made by a friend of mine of a group of us riding in the Klickitat River area of Washington back in 2002. Pizza, pop and motorcycle movies; what more could you want? We are planning on another motorcycle movie night for early March and plans are to watch The Worlds Fastest Indian (a very good film starring Anthony Hopkins).

Saturday's ice-fishing adventure had a few hardy souls attend. I understand two different groups went out: one early group (for the men; right Jason?) and a group that met at the designated time and went to Canyon Ferry. I've heard the Canyon Ferry group caught......a cold and not much else. Not sure how the early group faired but I understand they went to the causeway. Probably caught 75 lunker trout and a paddle fish......but they let them all go; you know, catch and release and all.....

Tuesday's meeting and Bible study had a good turn out again (we had 10 show up). We spent quite a bit of time going over Outdoorsmen business. I feel we need to get Outdoorsmen business taken care of sooner so we can get into Bible study earlier and go longer. I'd very much like to get feedback from all of you though. The meetings are for all of us so please respond with your thoughts and opinions.

We studied Luke 17:20-37 but didn't get all the way through (the discussion was excellent though and we ended up doing as much, if not more, study in Exodus thanks to me getting us off topic....a bit....).

Glenn introduced an idea about possibly getting involved with AngelFood Ministries to bring low cost food to the Helena area for needy families. You can find out more about AngelFood Ministries by visiting http://www.angelfoodministries.com

We discussed an idea for a community free firewood outreach that we'd most likely begin this spring. Still many details to work out but the basics are a local contractor is thinning beetle-kill trees in the general Helena area and is enthusiastic to have a group such as ours help remove the felled trees from the private properties. I contacted the US Forest Service rep assigned to the MT Governor's office with a few questions about handling beetle-kill trees and his response is below.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
From:
Sent: Wednesday, February 04, 2009 2:53 PM
To: Noble, John
Subject: RE: Questions about handling beetle kill wood

I’m glad you’re thinking about this. Trees that are obviously dead and have no needles pose no problem—the beetles have hatched and flown on to attack green living trees. However, trees that still have needles but appear dead, especially if the needles are just yellow rather than red, probably do have larvae that will hatch in May or June and if brought into town, could attack pine trees here. The safe thing if at all possible is to cut the trees that have obviously been dead for more than a year. They make better firewood too. Hope that helps. We've contacted a local contractor who is conducting beetle kill removal on private property in the surrounding area. The contractor is enthusiastic to have our group assist in removing the felled trees from the sites. I have some questions and/or concerns about this however.

Can beetle kill trees be safely brought into town and split for firewood? Are there any concerns we should have about transporting beetles and/or their larvae from the cut site to a storage/distribution site here in Helena?

Our goal is to provide free firewood to needy families in the Helena are but we want to make sure we do it in a responsible manner.

Thanks,

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Upcoming Outdoorsmen Events

Saturday 2/7/2009 - Outdoorsmen Family Ski Day at Great Divide
Great Divide opens for skiing at 9:00 AM. Keith and a couple of others are planning on meeting at Great Divide at 8:00 AM sharp. A few other Outdoorsmen will be on site by 8:30 AM to help direct people as they arrive and help distribute lift tickets and get people their rental equipment. Look for signs that read HSBC Outdoorsmen attached to Glenn's big white pickem-up-truck.

For the record, Keith reports we had at least 38 paid attendees as of last night. Great job Keith and everyone else involved.

Next Outdoorsmen Bible Study's
Sunday 2/8/2009 - Starbucks on Prospect, 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM
We didn't get all the way finished with Luke 17:20-37 so we will finish that up and possibly get started on Luke 18:1-8. We had 5 guys attend. We covered Luke 17:11-19 (The grateful Samaritan). We'll be going over the rest of chapter 17 and possibly get into 18 at the next Bible study (2/3/09).

The Outdoorsmen Family Ski Day payment deadline quickly approacheth. I've contacted a little over half the folks that have signed up and will contact the rest tomorrow.

We are keeping a log of prayer requests from each Outdoorsmen meeting but have decided not to publish them in any manner (web page, newsletter, etc.). Some of our prayer requests may be personal in nature or simply not something we'd like to have e-mailed to 40-something people. Glenn will be keeping the logs and will be periodically checking up with the requestors to see how things are going.

Upcoming Outdoorsmen Events

Friday 1/30/2009 - Outdoorsmen Motorcycle Movie Night
7:30 PM at my place -- bring pop and/or chips. I think we had 15-16 Outdoorsmen show up to help out both setting up and tearing down. You all were awesome!

Hats off to Glenn Morrison for planning the event and arranging everything; the church, linens, rental equipment, generators, prizes, guest speakers, food, center pieces, etc. That's a lot of logistics and once again you brought it all together very well.

I'd also like to make sure we all remember to thank more than a few wives and other family members that worked right along side of us. Michelle Chard, Jody Morrison, Patty Foster are just a few of the wives I remember. Justin Chard, Jerry Brassaurd's youngest son and Frank Foster's daughter pitched in as well. I know there were others that I've missed and I'd really appreciate it if you'd reply to me with the names of those I missed. Even with 15-16 of us working together there was still plenty to do for these other volunteers. We need to make sure they know we appreciate it.

Next Outdoorsmen Bible study is Tuesday January 20, 7:00 PM at Smith's in East Helena

The following meeting is Sunday January 25, 5:30 - 7:00 PM at Starbuck's on Prospect

Outdoorsmen schedule of events

Saturday January 24, 10:00 AM - Assist with delivery of 'Paint The Town Pink' awards and prizes
Connie McGlaughlin has asked for volunteer manpower to assist with moving awards and prizes from Mountain West Bank to the Civic Center for the Florence Crittenton Home's 'Paint The Town Pink' program.
Connie has trucks arranged but needs help to load and unload.
10:00 AM at the Mountain West Bank location all the way at the East end of Broadway (the new one you can see from I-15)
2725 Colonial Drive
Helena, MT
http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Helena&state=MT&address=2725+Colonial+Dr

Saturday January 31 at some time - Outdoorsmen ice-fishing at some lake somewhere
Obviously I will need to get you more details as soon as I can.

Saturday February 7 - Outdoorsmen Family Ski Day at Great Divide
We don't have a meeting place set up yet but Hannaford seems a logical choice.
Remember, you need to have payment, in full, to Keith Newmeyer by Super bowl Sunday (2/1/2009). We once again labored over the parable of the shrewd (but dishonest) manager (Luke 16). Yours truly is still having trouble wrapping my mind around it (Joe Hayes, on the other hand, claims it's clear as mud....). The numbers at the meetings have been increasing and it's great. There's still plenty of room for more and we'd love to have you join us.

Next meeting Sunday January 11, 5:30 - 7:00 PM at Starbuck's on Prospect. We discussed options for moving to a new location but decided that Starbuck's still gives us the most stars for our bucks (get it? stars....bucks..... take your time, I'll wait..........) so we'll continue meeting there until a new opportunity presents itself (a quote from Qui-Gon Jinn in 'The Phantom Menace'). We will be wrapping up Bible study and taking prayer requests at 6:45 PM SHARP from now on (for the benefit of the Starbuck's employees, the AWANA volunteers and the parents of children at AWANA). So, all attending who wear watches will have the responsibility of keeping us on schedule.

If you haven't contacted Glenn Morrison or myself regarding Outdoorsmen shirts for the Game Feast please do so ASAP on Thursday 1/8/2009.

John Noble
outdoorsmen@hannaford.org

The Outdoorsmen Christmas tree give away finished off very well. On Friday December 19, a few of us met at the church to load up the trees and deliver to the Toys for Tots distribution site. Thanks to the Chard family for lending us their trailer and to the Kauzlarich family for showing up to help out. On Saturday morning Glenn and I met Frank Foster at the distribution site for the 9:00 AM start. It was -17 degrees and snowing. The time really flew by quickly as we kept busy not only loading trees for families that wanted one but also keeping the distribution line stocked with milk and butter, unloading groceries delivered by Vans Thriftway and helping recipients get their cars loaded. It was a very rewarding experience. We plan on doing this again next year and would really like to see a better turn out of Outdoorsmen. Remember, this is one of our efforts at a community outreach and we all need to take an active part.

Sunday's (tonight's) meeting at Starbuck's had the best turn-out ever (that I know of, at least); we had eleven guys show up. Good job! Bible study was on Luke 16:1-9. I, for one, find this parable very confusing. The discussion was great this evening particularly with so many in attendance to offer insight and opinions.

The next Outdoorsmen meeting is on Tuesday, January 6 at Smith's in East Helena, 7:00 PM. The following meeting is Sunday, January 11 at Starbuck's on Prospect. Note that Starbuck's is now closing at 7:00 PM on Sundays which means we may want to find a new meeting location. If you have a suggestion please e-mail it to me. I'll compile all the responses and bring them to the next meeting.

Outdoorsmen Wild Game Feast -- Saturday, January 17
Setup and prep begins at 12:00 noon. We really need everyone to show up to help with this. We are expecting ~200 people to attend this years event. There's a lot to setup including removing all sanctuary seating, setting up dinner tables and chairs for 200 in the sanctuary, etc., etc. Additionally, we need to pick up rental equipment (chairs and tables) in advance and need to have some guys meet Glenn Morrison at the rental warehouse about an hour early. Once the event is over, we need to clean up the entire church and have it prepped for Sunday services. There will be plenty to do so please make the commitment to helping out both before and after. Doors open to the public at 5:00 PM....let the feasting begin!

Outdoorsmen Family Ski Day -- Saturday, February 7 at Great Divide
Group discount on both lift tickets and equipment rentals. Keith Newmeyer has negotiated a very good discount rate so be sure to plan to take advantage of it. Even if you don't ski yourself please spread the word as we need a minimum of 40 paying skiers to get the discount. Sign-up sheets in the church foyer between services and after second service.

I haven't received any feedback at all from anyone on interest in attending a BattleZone course (http://battlezone.echurchnetwork.net/). There's a BattleZone introductory meeting, Monday January 12th, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM at Hannaford. A new BattleZone course begins on January 19 so if you're interested you'll want to make sure and attend the introduction meeting. Both Glenn Morrison and Thomas Fleury have completed a BattleZone course so contact them if you have questions. We may attempt to schedule another BattleZone course starting a bit later (perhaps February?) but without interest from you this seems unlikely. Please let me know if you are interested or need more information.

John Noble Outdoorsmen@Hannaford.org
HSBC Outdoorsmen

Thursday 12/18/2008

!!!!! Family Sledding Day has been cancelled !!!!!
The Outdoorsmen family sledding day scheduled for Saturday 12/21 has been cancelled due to weather. The Toys for Tots gift distribution is taking place on Saturday at the Salvation Army. The Outdoorsmen will be giving away the Christmas trees we cut to families at this event. It'd sure be nice to have some Outdoorsmen in attendance to help out. The event starts at 9:00 AM and goes to 5:00 PM.
